Boracay Island actually belongs to the municipality of Malay in the Province of Aklan in the Philippines. As of year 2000 census, the island has a population of around 12,003. In other words, it is just a small island with few numbers of inhabitants. Despite this few numbers of people, you might be surprised why you can see thousands of people here. Well, these people are probably tourists who are enticed to witness the beauty of Boracay Island for themselves.

A Glimpse on the History of Boracay Island

Prior to the Spanish colonization, Boracay Island was already an inhabited place. In other words, there were already few people who were living here before the Spaniards came in the Philippines. The very first people in the island were the tribe of Ati people. Spanish colonizers simply called the place “Buracay”. When Europeans came here, the island’s population is around a hundred of people and their way of living was cultivating rice and raising goats.

It was way back on April 25, 1956 when Boracay was declared to be an independent place. The persons who firstly owned a number of properties in this island were Sofia Gonzales Tirol, who happened to be a judge, and her husband named Lamberto Hontiveros Tirol. There were around 1900 properties they owned in the island, which included fruit trees and coconut plantations.

Talking About Tourism

As far as tourism is concerned, Boracay Island was discovered by a lot of local and foreign tourists way back on the 70’s. From that particular time on until this very day, the island never runs out of visitors. As a matter of fact, the number of tourists who keep on coming in this wonderful place is increasing day by day. One American film was filmed in this island, which was directed by the late famous American film director, Robert Burgess Aldrich. The movie was titled “Too Late the Hero”, which was released in 1970.

Backpackers started to come in Boracay in the 80’s, which was also the time when Boracay Island became a popular budget-friendly destination for local and foreign vacationers. During the 90’s, the beaches in the island were recognized as one of the finest ones in the entire world. In the year 2012, Boracay was recognized as the second most amazing beach in the world. It was next to the most amazing one, which was the Providenciales in the islands of Turks and Caicos.
